Kat barges into Tracey’s room armed with a tub of ice-cream, concern and zero tact. “Mel called. She heard that last night was intense?”

For once in her life, Tracey isn’t in the mood to gossip with her best friend. She needed to let her thoughts about the previous night simmer for a while and although she adored Kat, her friend certainly isn’t the type to put anything on the back burner. Tracey sits up in bed and stretches her arms out for the ice-cream. Junk food might make the early morning interrogation easier to stomach.

Kat stands out of reach and ploughs the spoon into the tub before raising it to her lips. “What happened?” she asks, then places it in her mouth.

Glancing at her, Tracey offers a shrug and makes a beckoning motion with her fingers for the dessert. With the spoon still dangling from her lips, Kat shakes her head. She smooths the covers on the bed and plops down.

“It’s too early to talk about it and it’s too early for ice-cream.”

“For you maybe, I’ve already been for a run. So, spill.” Kat stares at Tracey with a look of sympathy and exasperation. It’s the kind of look she’s used to getting from her parents, her university professors and her bosses but never from Kat. It doesn’t bother her when other people act like she isn’t living up to her potential but from Kat, it stings.

She may as well open up, she reasons. If she can’t talk to Kat about it, then there really is something wrong. Tracey feels her throat closing as she tells her best friend about working as a waitress. About how she doesn’t recognise herself anymore.

“You could just bail out of the job, Trace. You don't have to do it if you don’t like it.”

Tracey snatches the spoon out of her friend’s hand and takes a bite of ice-cream. “I know. I’ll probably only work one more party and then quit.” She chews at a fingernail; she had hoped her response would sound breathy and carefree, but it doesn’t even sound convincing to her. It seemed like the right thing to say. Besides, the corporate gig promised to be different than the bucks night.

“Honestly, I’m thrilled,” Kat replies. “The last ten days have been miserable. What am I supposed to do on the weekend if both you and Mel are working? I need my girl’s nights.”

Tracey let’s out a snort. “So, my wellbeing isn’t a factor? It’s about you partying?”

“Exactly, I need my wing woman back!”

Laughing, Kat attempts to wrestle the spoon back from Tracey but instead, sends it clattering to the ground. As she leans down to retrieve it her giggles intensify. Perplexed, Tracey watches her friend.

“All this exercise has gone to your head; you’ve officially lost it.”

Kat rights herself, still shaking with laughter. She has something in her hand, but it’s not the spoon. The rose vibrator dangles between her thumb and forefinger as she holds it out in front of her. Her nose is scrunched in mock disgust.
